Ekadasi fating - Shuddha ekadasi

Everyone, whether saivaite or vaishnavite, between 8 and 80 years should observe ekadasi fasting.

Children or old people or diseased, can eat in the evening. Fasting on ekadasi burns the sins. Ekadasi fasting is above ganga, yamuna and other sacred rivers or sacred places like kasi, gaya.

When Ekadasi is mixed with dasami during Arunodaya (96 mins before sunrise), then that is considered ashuddha ekadasi. Ekadasi fasting is to be avoided during such days. In those cases, fasting is to be observed on Dwadasi instead.

Observing ekadasi fasting on ashuddha ekadasi fetches bad effects.

If one stays awake on the night of ekadasi, it is said, in Prahlada samhita, that all devas - brahma, Indra, Shiva, and sages like narada muni, Vedavyasa and bhakta prahlada will be there at such a place.

One should break the fast on time on Dwadasi day. If one misses to break the fast on time, the benefits obtained by 12 Dwadasi vrat are lost.
